A full week of Gluten Free

September 11, 2011

I thought it would be fun to look back over the last week and think about how going Gluten Free effected my mood life.

Why did I EVER think going Gluten Free would be a good idea?

The bad news is that it was a really good idea because my tummy troubles have gotten significantly better. So, I’m going to continue to suffer the loss of belgian waffles, pancakes, biscuits, bread (the normal kind), muffins, most all cookies, beer, ice cream cones, beer, beer, pizza, cereal (except cinnamon chex), spaghetti, pretzels, granola bars, and random things like elk jerky and the enchilada sauce from Trader Joe’s which both have hidden barley malt in them.

But all that aside, I’ve found some pretty fun gluten free options of almost everything…. except the cookies! I don’t know how long this diet will last unless I get my hands on some pretty delicious gluten free cookies here in the next few weeks days.

I’m eating much healthier in general. I’m a girl who really likes her carbs. Without being able to enjoy sandwiches at lunchtime and the mindless grab of a cookie or muffin around 3pm I’m filling up on more salads and veggies which is AWESOME!

I’m excited to see how my diet and tummy issues continue to get better.

Would I recommend going Gluten Free?

NO WAY in H-E-DoubleHockeySticks!

It’s hard. It’s frustrating. It leads to scary-hungry-Maren a lot. It’s not the easiest when eating out or with other people. I’m one of those high maintenance eaters now…. Not liking that at all.

But, dealing with the tummy problems I had was the worst! And I got to the point of wanting to do anything, ANYTHING to make them start getting better. So… sacrifices must be made!!!

I am still making an appointment to see my doctor because I want to get to the bottom of what is actually going on. Not just fix it. Plus, I don’t know if going Gluten Free will actually completely fix the problems. It might just cover them up.

Gluten Free is the way to be…. for now.

Tell me about you! I want to know….

Have you ever gone on a pretty restrictive diet for health reasons?

When you get back from vacation do you unpack right away?

I procrastinate…. I procrastinate a lot!

What carb would to take with you to a deserted island?

Cookies. No, Beer. No, muffins. No, Cookies…. to hard!

What’s your favorite number?

Honestly, the first couple weeks are the hardest. Your body is still processing out the gluten and it’s remnants and you basically have to learn how to read all over again so you can see all the hidden gluten in items, but once you get the hang of it, it’s definitely worth it. You are definitely going to become a brand shopper, once you know what is safe, it’s easiest just to stick with it. Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and the farmers market are going to be your best friends!

I was also shocked about enchilada sauce! But the smaller cans of the Las Palmas brand of green and red are GF, the bigger cans are not… go figure.

You are so right, I already have a new found appreciation for Trader Joe’s.

I had to go gluten free a little over a year ago. My honey was deployed at the time, but when he came home he opted to do the gf diet with me. When he’s away, he still eats gluten, but not at home. He feels SUCH a difference in his body – just in general terms. He’s not like me – he doesn’t get sick for days on end if he eats gluten, just a general “better” without it.

The first weeks are hard but if you like to cook it’s actually freeing. If you like to bake, all the better. My sister thinks the cookies I make are BETTER than the “regular” ones. There are some incredible recipes out there, if you are willing to cook!

Thanks for your comment Ally. I definitely feel so much better not eating gluten. Now, whether its because I actually have celiac disease or not, I don’t know. I definitely like cooking and baking and I’m searching for yummy cookie recipes all the time. Thanks for the advice.
