My First Ever Green Monster!

April 29, 2010

Good morning bloggies! I’m back! I just needed a little time to clear my head from the cyber world. I posted some things via my web blog program from Windows Live, but none of them were posted until this morning. I also updated my recipe page with a new recipe! But back to my hiatus. Blogging is a great thing for me, and in so many ways it’s a form of therapy. I know that I wouldn’t be near as mentally and emotionally healthy today as if I had never discovered blogging and this world of positivity. But sometimes I just need to pull back and enjoy the grass outside my door for a while… metaphor for the life that’s bustling around me… bad I know. Anyways I’m back with gusto now and I have an amazing breakfast story to share with ya!

My First Green Monster…

I was very nervous when taking this pic... these are not normal smoothie ingredients

Lately I have been in this health food obsession. But not yucky tasting foods, but really healthy meals and snacks and drinks (everything really) that taste so amazing. I want to focus on health rather than quantity(ies). So I was searching the internet for yummy-ness and I stumbled upon this site all about the Green Monster Movement. I was instantly hooked. I found a recipe that seemed like a sure thing, there are some pretty liberal ones out there than kinda had me gagging, but I just had to try it. Plus breakfast is just not fun for me. I don’t know what it is, but I’m just not a breakfast person. I have to force myself to eat every morning and I don’t like making breakfast foods. I’m so strange.

Anyways yesterday morning I woke up at 8:30… a normal wake up for me, I hate waking up to the alarm clock, and I jumped in the car and went to the store to buy fresh spinach and frozen mixed berries. My mom is the main grocery shopper, I can’t wait ’til I have my own place so I can afford to be the grocery shopper, I have a feeling my cooking will get much more fun and interesting then, but she hates spinach and we never have it in the house. When I got home I got everything out and laid it out on the counter, at this point I was pretty nervous!

Popeye would be proud!

First off, I hate bananas! I have always hated bananas, and I always will. I can’t stand their smell, how they feel when they are peeled, how they feel when they aren’t peeled, and their texture and taste. Gluugh! They make me gag to even touch them, let alone get any in my mouth. It’s been like this my entire life. Anyways I can eat them in my smoothies from Jamba Juice as long as there are no chunks and I can’t really taste it. But as soon as a chunk shows up in my mouth the smoothie experience is over. I havent been much of a smoothie maker in this life, so I have pretty much just given the blending occupation to Jamba Juice. Anyways I almost gagged trying to peel and get that half banana in there but I did it first so that I could cover it up with all the other yummy ingredients. This spinach though, just kept scaring me. It was on the counter next to the berries and I was like…ehh, I don’t know about you.

Look at all that spinach... Can we not talk about my avacado green counter tops? I hate my house! :-(

Okay, so after adding all the ingredients I had to take a picture. They kinda mess with your mind because there just seems to be so much more spinach than everything else. And supposedly the fruit is supposed to cover up the spinach taste, well I’m not buying it at this point. The ratio is just all wrong! Plus the recipe I had called for only 6 strawberries. I do not like strawberry and banana flavored anything so I went with a mixed berry concoction from the super market praying that it would cover up the banana even better. But there just doesn’t seem to be enough fruit in there even now when I look at it…

I also think for this one I added a little more agave nectar than they recommended in the recipe, I was just freaking out so much . Okay smoothies are not supposed to be green so it’s a little bit of a mind trip. But that was the one thing I was looking forward to too. I wanted a green mess of a smoothie when I was done. Because it looks so much cooler when you drink a green smoothie rather than a normal berry colored one.

Let Her Blend!

So not green! So not green and kinda an un-appetizing brown color! What went wrong? Okay I know what went wrong. I added too many berries due to my worry about spinach taste, well, really smooth spinach taste ;-). But here it is, before I tasted it and I was even more nervous now.

My mom and brother were home getting ready for school and work, I have night classes on Monday and Wednesday wich allows for the creativity and boldness in kitchen in the morning lol. But there were there and after seeing what it looked like congregated in the small confined cooking room until I drank it. They were both a little worried and wanted to see me gag I think.

To be honest my mom is crazy healthy. She juice fasts all the time and drinks all kinds of things I think should never be drank, but she knows what a wimp I am and had to see me try to take down this brown-ish looking smoothie goo.

So I finally got the nerve to try it and …

holy green yummy-ness! Graaarrr!

I didn’t like it at all ;-)!

Back to this Morning…

I am making another Green Monster to use up the spinach as I don’t want it to go bad and no one else is going to eat it. Plus it was just sooo good! I’m making it part of the morning routine of breakfasts I’ll actually make and eat.

my newest obsession involving peanut butter: peanut butter and raisin

This morning I made peanut butter and raisin toast, which amazing! It’s like peanut butter and jelly but different and yummy in a different way. So good on celery too; the peanut butter and raisins… fyi.

Well I’m off to shower and then make my second ever green monster then off to school. Only Buddhism today but I do have to finish a take home mid-term tonight. I’m hoping that this protein packed toast with the green monster will keep me full and energized until I gen home from class… around 3. It’s an experiment :-\ we will see, I’m somewhat doubtful.
